Numbers

Kristi's blood work is looking very good. Although, her hematocrit is still dropping slowly. This isn't a problem right now, she is still in a healthy range. Just to be sure her liver functions are a-ok, she will have another CT scan on Thursday. Today, we picked up some more hand weights and a workout bench. We also picked up some protein shake mix stuff loaded with Branched Chain Amino Acids. Now we can follow Casey's workout regimne to the T.

Not to stir up unneeded controversy, but I am dubious of these fad-of-month nutrition theories, based a reductive single-macronutrient approach to the human diet. They could be harmful.

I suggest taking something from the Michael Pollan playbook: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

One of the best articles I've read about food in a long while is linked below

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/28/magazine/28nutritionism.t.html?ex=1179460800&en=b2f882cfda1aa6af&ei=5070

The basic idea being that if your great grandmother wouldn't recognize it a food you should not eat it, and if it makes health claims based on the presence or absence of single compounds you should be incredulous. The human diet has evolved over eons to eat whole foods, not just single compounds.

Oh Will,

U R so sweet. Don't worry your pretty little head. K is in [OK] hands. I work hard to make her good foods. I think we are eating well. But just to be sure, we are getting nutritionist, courtesy of Rich and Elaine. I couldn't agree more that 90% of processed American foods are terrible. Everything she eats is fresh and whenever possible organic. The protein is just a supplement. Mostly so she can have something with no fat or carbs just before she works out in the morning. Consider the fact that they (the doctors) wanted her to have an Ensure or Carnation with every meal at the hospital. The protein shakes fill that role.

Sorry Kristi & Joe

I didn't mean to imply that you weren't planing a great diet. Just my 2c about health claims. At any rate, you'll really like the article. It made me think about food in a whole new way.

On the topic of food, if you're looking for farmer's-market-style local produce this time of year, at the Avenues bakery there are organic/local farmers selling their stuff at 10:30am every Saturday.

Enjoy!

climbwill,
Hi there, I am Casey signing under my wifes name because I do not have a google account. Not to nag you about your comment, but I think I should reply so everyone else that sees this will not misunderstand. Their diet is not based on a single macronutrient, either absent or in abundance. It is in fact all encompassing and very healthy (good carbs, healthy fats, proteins). The diet is based on their personal goals. Nutrition is a personal thing that works different for everyone. There are some basics that are general, but it is very personal based on needs and goals. If you would like more info, please do not hesitate to ask, (turnerca@comcast.net). Do not assume that because they say they bought a bottle of whey protein, protein is all they are eating. Whey protein in fact has a complete amino acid profile. Its only problem is that it is a liquid. But it is a supplement and just that for someone that might have a hard time adjusting to eating the required amount of food she needs for now. Okay, enough blather by me. I do not mean to sound condescending in anyway if this so comes across. take care.

Casey
